The Office of Postdoctoral Services (OPS) and the Duke University Postdoctoral Association (DUPA) are sponsoring a new initiative to promote small group peer mentors among postdocs with shared interests. Similar small group formats have been successful across the country (e.g., MIT REFS Programs and the Berkeley MCB Postdoc Lunch Club). An initial survey we conducted in March 2012 indicated that many Duke postdocs are interested in meeting regularly in small groups to discuss challenging areas and offer mutual support and advice. Topics of interest included:
- research progress
- obtaining permanent jobs
- work-life balance
- postdoc parents
- dual academic career couples / the “two-body problem”
- teaching-focused jobs
- women’s issues in the workplace
Six or seven groups peer support groups will be formed shortly. Meeting times and places for the different groups can be found in the calendar below:
We envision this website to serve as an additional forum to share information and offer advice. Please consider posting and participating.
