Get involved with DUPA

There are many opportunities to get involved with the Duke University Postdoctoral Association. The DUPA board of committee chairs meets once a month, and any postdoc with an interest in DUPA is welcome to attend. More information on the role of each committee is available on the About Us page. If you are interested in serving on any of our committees, you can contact the committee chair directly via the contact form there.

Postdoctorberfest 2011

Duke is proud of its postdocs! Join us for the sixth annual Postdoctoberfest, an appreciation event for Duke postdocs, their families, and the faculty and staff who support them. We will serve free hotdogs and veggie dogs with all the sides, beer from Durham favorite FullSteam Brewery, and delicious, local Maple View Farms ice cream. Live music will be provided by rising star Brett Harris, who recently performed with Michael Stipe of REM. For the kids, the popular Bouncy Tiger will be back on the lawn!

The Outstanding Postdoc Mentor Award recognizes that a good mentor serves not only as a teacher, but as an advisor, advocate, and role model to postdocs throughout their professional training. The Outstanding Postdoc Mentor serves as a model for the entire University and helps to promote a culture of mentoring at Duke. The Outstanding Postdoc Award recognizes that postdocs are crucial to the research mission of Duke. This award honors those postdocs who are not only skilled researchers, but who serve as advisors, advocates and role models for other postdocs and students.

At 5:00 pm on Friday October 21, Dr. Jim Siedow, Vice Provost for Research, and Dr JD Dunn, President of the Duke University Postdoctoral Association, will present awards to the Outstanding Postdoc Mentor and Outstanding Postdoc at Duke. The Outstanding Postdoc will receive $1000 as addition to their salary or stipend. The Outstanding Postdoc Mentor will receive $1000 for their lab. Both awardees will also receive a plaque and the famous Outstanding Beer Stein, guaranteed to impress loved ones and lab-mates alike! Every postdoc and mentor who is nominated for the award will receive a congratulatory letter from the Office of Postdoctoral Services and the Duke University Postdoctoral Association. Postdoc Survey

In December 2010 the Duke University Postdoctoral Association (DUPA) and the Duke Office of Postdoctoral Services (DOPS) conducted a survey among Duke postdocs. The survey collected demographic information, assessed the effectiveness of the Duke Postdoctoral Policy, postdoc job satisfaction, career goals and other factors.

We’re happy to tell you the survey was very successful, thanks to you – Duke postdocs!

The response rate was over 50%, a much higher participation rate than in similar surveys. We thank you for the time and effort you put into filling out the survey. We recently received the anonymized survey results and we are working on analyzing the data. We’ll update you on the survey results as soon as we can, and as planned, we will follow up on the issues you raised.

Organize a Microparty

Would you like to get involved in organizing social events for postdocs? Do you have a creative idea that will lure your fellow postdocs out of their offices and labs?

In order to encourage informal networking among the postdoctoral community, The Duke University Postdoctoral Association (DUPA) and the Duke University Office of Postdoctoral Services will provide up to $150 (per event) to fund a limited number of “microparties” — small social events for postdocs.

The rules:

1. The organizer must be a Duke postdoc and the event must be open to Duke postdocs, although the number of participants may be limited.

2. Volunteers must attend at least 2 DUPA Council meetings before they can organize a microparty. For more information about the DUPA Council, contact Rebekah Fleming

3. Organizers must submit a short proposal, including a budget, to the DUPA Council for approval.

For more information, contact Jeff Blackinton with the form below.
